Abû al 'Abbâs Ahmad Ibn' Abd al Halîm Ibn Taymiyya, born in Harrân in 1263 (Hegira 661) and died in Damascus in 1328. Ibn Taymiyya lived from the age of seven in Damascus where his father had emigrated. He had a fruitful youth there, very early on, he learned the Koran by heart and endeavored to attend the sessions where the tradition of the Prophet was taught. Science has mixed with his blood and his flesh as al Bazzâr will say, adding: "he is not a sane being who doubts that Ibn Taymiyya is one of the people about whom the Prophet announced. that they were sent at the head of each century to renovate religion. Ibn Taymiyya's knowledge was very extensive, in all the disciplines in which he was interested.
In terms of tradition, Ibn Radjab said of him: “If it were not that perfection goes beyond the human framework, I would have said that any hadith that Ibn Taymiyya does not know is not one. In matters of law, he was so powerful and aware of his power that one day, while having an interview with the authoritative ulemas in each of the four Sunni schools, Ibn Taymiyya said to them: "Know that I am more knowing that each of you in the law knowledge of the school to which he belongs. But his knowledge was even greater in Hanbali law. His strength was not limited to knowledge of law and tradition. He was one of the greatest doctors specialized in the knowledge of beliefs and doctrines, availing himself of Islam or not, religious or philosophical, he even had a perfect knowledge of the beliefs of antiquity. He bequeathed to us a monumental science well preserved in his work the fatâwâ which make up the bulk of his work and which, edited and published by the care of King Faisal of Arabia, exceed thirty volumes.
Ibn Taymiyya has been imprisoned many times for his positions and his defense of the truth. When he was last imprisoned, he remained in prison until his death, having been deprived of quill, paper and ink for the past five months. On his death, the funeral procession which accompanied his remains left no doubt about his great popularity. He had been the head of the hanbaliyya madrasa. Apart from his setbacks with the governors, often due to false accusations of anthropomorphism, Ibn Taymiyya had taken a very active part in the propaganda for the fight against the Mongol invasion.
