The Moors conquered the city in 711. It became the center of Abel ar-Rahman who founded the emirate of Cordoba in 756, then of a caliphate after having severed all links with the Abbasids of Baghdad.

From 785 to 987, the Muslims undertook the construction of the great mosque. The heyday of the city was reached in 929, when the Umayyad ʻAbd al-Rahman III established the Caliphate of Cordoba. In 858, going up the Guadalquivir, the Viking leader Hasting plundered Cordoba.

The reigns of Abd al-Rahman III (912-961), his son Al-Hakam II (961-976) and Al-Mansur Ibn Abi Aamir (981-1002) constitute the most glorious period in the history of the city. It was then the most populous city, with nearly 250,000 inhabitants. The city then had more than a thousand mosques and six hundred public baths.

Throughout the 10th century, Cordoba was to be Baghdad's equal, in size, population and above all in magnificence. A systematic effort is made to constitute a library containing all the major works, old and recent known at the time. A network of scouts, collectors, copyists, extended to the whole of the Islamic world, forwarded to Cordoba a fabulous collection of works, equal in importance to that of the Abbasid caliphs. The figure of 400,000 volumes is cited. In Cordoba itself an army of scribes and bookbinders took care of the upkeep of these treasures.

During the years 1220 and 1230, the caliphate collapsed and was divided into more than ten small states, the taifas (Arabic Tâ'ifa, pl. Tawâ'if: community). Their rivalry will make them vulnerable to Christian attacks.
